These types of accidents, increasingly common in Cuba, reveal the complex and dangerous reality of transportation on the island: the coexistence of buses, light vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, and even animal-drawn carts on poorly maintained roads, with little signage and lacking necessary safety measures.

Devastated families, mourning communities, and an increasingly aware citizenry regarding the precariousness of roads and the lack of effective public policies to mitigate these risks.

In Cuba, traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death, and the combination of poor infrastructure, excessive improvisation in transportation, and the silence of institutions only heightens the perception of road safety issues.

Meanwhile, the loved ones of the young woman who passed away and the relatives of the survivor grapple with the pain of a tragedy that, like so many others, could have been prevented in a country where asphalt mingles with oxen and where citizens face constant dangers every time they hit the road.
