A traffic accident that occurred this Tuesday on the Loma de Rejondones, in the municipality of Báguanos, province of Holguín, caused severe material damage and has left the local residents on edge.
The incident was reported on Facebook by the user Alexander Ríos Cruz, who posted images of the location where an off-road vehicle commonly known as "almendrón" collided with a black Chevrolet Colorado Z71.
The photographs show the truck with its front end destroyed and the other vehicle overturned on its side.
So far, no official reports have been released to confirm the number of victims or the exact causes of the crash. However, the incident has once again brought public attention to this stretch of road, which is considered one of the most dangerous in the province.
"Many unfortunate accidents occur every year in this stretch," a user commented on the post. "I've witnessed quite a few accidents; many containers have overturned, especially those from other provinces that are unaware of the danger this hill presents," she added.
A hill marked by tragedy
La Loma de Rejondones, located between the towns of El Manguito and Rejondón, in the heights of Maniabón, has been the site of repeated fatal accidents in recent years.
In mid-July, an accident at Loma de Rejondones cost the life of the driver of a truck belonging to Almacenes Universales S.A. Varadero. The incident, reported in the Facebook group ‘Accidents Buses & Trucks’, showcased images of the vehicle overturned on its side.
The victim was identified by relatives as “Jorgito”, originally from Cárdenas, Matanzas. Colleagues and family members expressed their sorrow on social media, describing him as a “great driver and father.”
In March 2025, a trailer overturned in the same stretch, resulting only in material losses. Residents then warned about the recurrence of these incidents, which had already accumulated several in just a few months.
Months earlier, in December 2024, a tragic accident at the site resulted in one fatality and several injuries when a truck from the Explomat Company collided with a truck from Tranzmec. The deceased was identified as Dennis Jaime Sánchez, a resident of Castillito, Mayarí, who turned 46 on the very day of the incident.
Among the injured was an eight-year-old girl, who was urgently transferred to the pediatric hospital in Holguín. Days later, another victim, Leopoldo Castillo Torres, died following surgery at the Lucía Íñiguez clinical hospital, which brought the death toll to an increase.
In September 2023, the Camagüey driver Osveri Tamayo lost his life when the Hino truck he was driving fell down a ravine on this same slope. The accident sparked strong criticism on social media because some neighbors collected the scattered goods instead of helping the victims.
These events reflect an alarming trend in road safety in Holguín, where the precariousness of the infrastructure, lack of signage, and deterioration of the vehicle fleet come together.
The collision between the almendrón and the Chevrolet Colorado at Loma de Rejondones adds to a long list of tragedies in the eastern region. So far, no official investigation has been issued regarding this latest incident.
