A fierce fire in a landfill on 16th Street in the Chicharrones neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba grew to large proportions after spreading to a hill covered with trees adjacent to several homes in the area.

The flames, fueled by the accumulation of waste and the drought affecting the eastern part of the country, raised significant concern among residents, who feared that the fire would spread to their homes, reported independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

Residents immediately alerted the authorities, and shortly thereafter, crews from the Fire Department arrived in the area to begin the extinguishing efforts.

According to witnesses, firefighters worked for hours to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from reaching the nearby houses.

The residents reported that the accumulation of garbage on the hill is a recurring problem and warned that, unless effective measures are taken, similar incidents could occur with more severe consequences.

This fire adds to others recorded in Santiago de Cuba over the past year, where residents have set fire to dumpsters as a form of protest against the inefficient waste collection.

In 2024, a similar incident occurred near the market La Plaza, on Aguilera Street, and weeks later, fires were reported in the military area Las Flores.

The waste crisis in Santiago reflects a national problem. A recent study in Havana revealed that every day an amount of waste equivalent to three Olympic-sized swimming pools goes uncollected, creating fire hotspots and an environment conducive to the proliferation of diseases.

The residents of the neighborhood Chicharrones are demanding an immediate response from the authorities, and they warn that the accumulation of waste not only degrades the quality of life but also directly endangers the safety of their communities.
