A guard at the Castillo de la Punta in Havana was injured after being the victim of a violent assault early this Sunday morning, according to reports from users on social media.
The incident occurred around midnight when the worker, an older man guarding the property under restoration, was attacked by criminals who entered the premises with the intent to steal.
According to the testimony shared by Facebook user Guillermo Cruz Peralta, the guard arrived staggering and disoriented at the location where he was, with a head full of injuries and signs of having been brutally beaten.
The assailants reportedly stole a sander and other personal belongings, leaving him badly injured on the ground. "They left him beaten, as if his life were worth less than a tool," lamented Cruz Peralta in his post.
Facebook user Adelth Bonne Gamboa shared an image showing the bloodied face of the elderly man, with multiple injuries that confirm the violence of the attack. "It’s one horror after another that we experience on this island," he wrote.
The Castillo de la Punta, located on the Havana waterfront, is a colonial fortress currently undergoing restoration and lacks the necessary security measures to protect both its staff and its heritage.
Such incidents have become increasingly frequent in the Cuban capital, where public insecurity worsens due to the economic crisis and the deterioration of public services.
In January of this year, seven criminals were arrested by the police after robbing a private agromarket in Santiago de las Vegas, in the Boyeros municipality of Havana.
On that occasion, the thieves neutralized the site's guard and stole several sacks of rice along with a large amount of meat products, according to a source linked to the Ministry of Interior (Minint).
