The Chilean presidential candidate Jeannette Jara, representative of the Communist Party of Chile, stated during a televised interview that “clearly, Cuba is not a democracy”, although she defended that the process of transformation must be resolved by the Cuban people themselves.
The statement was made on the program “Car Curo a La Moneda”, from the channel 24 Horas, where she was asked about her position regarding political regimes such as those in Cuba and Venezuela.
“Regarding Cuba, the reflection I've made has been painful for me. Clearly, it is not a democracy, but they have to resolve it themselves,” Jara said, referring to the political situation on the island.
He also indicated that Cuba is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by "the blockade" and mentioned that its island condition and a different political system worsen the situation. “I find that they have enough problems without kicking them on the ground,” he remarked.
In a previous interview, Jara denied that there is a dictatorship on the island, and now she refused to answer that recurring question directly.
Regarding Venezuela, the candidate stated that “no one leaves their country as millions of Venezuelans have, simply because they are doing well,” referring to the exodus caused by the crisis in that South American country.
Jara's statements have sparked reactions on social media, especially given their origin from a figure of the Chilean Communist Party, which has historically been aligned with leftist governments in Latin America.
Jeannette Jara, former Minister of Labor in the current government of Gabriel Boric, is one of the leading presidential candidates from her coalition for the upcoming general elections in 2026.
