Cuba secured its first medal at the II Junior Pan American Games thanks to the crew of the eight-person rowing team, which won the bronze medal in the Bay of Asunción, Paraguay.

The team, captained by Roberto Carlos Paz, crossed the finish line with a time of 5:45.96 minutes, just behind Chile (gold, 5:42.26) and Brazil (silver, 5:45.75). The Cubans reached the halfway mark in third position and managed to maintain it until the end.

“It is a source of pride to have contributed the first medal for Cuba. I am very happy with the team, the coaches, and everyone who has supported us to get here,” declared Paz in statements reported by the official newspaper Granma.

In the double sculls, Roberto Carlos Paz and Leduar Suárez finished fifth (6:39.06) in a final dominated by the Brazilians Joao Batista and Daniel Passold (6:31.97).

For their part, Adel Gutiérrez and Henry Heredia secured sixth place (7:27.16) in the men's pair without coxswain, a race won by the Chileans Rodrigo Paz and Pedro Labatub (6:42.63).
