The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) issued Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 3 on Sunday, updating the situation of tropical depression nine, a system that, although it remains with little change in its structure, has generated heavy rains and thunderstorms over eastern Cuba.

Throughout the night and early morning, the depression concentrated its most active areas over the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, where numerous showers and electrical discharges occurred, some of which were strong and locally intense in several locations.

The rainfall totals were significant, causing flooding, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Current location and characteristics of the system

At 6:00 AM, the center of the system was estimated to be at 23.1 degrees North latitude and 77.3 degrees West longitude, approximately 230 kilometers west-northwest of Isla Grande, Bahamas.

The phenomenon, with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and higher gusts, is moving at a speed of 11 km/h in a north-northwest direction.

Although the depression has not yet reached the category of a tropical storm, INSMET warned that it could intensify in the next 12 to 24 hours.

Forecast for the coming hours

Tropical Depression Nine will maintain a similar trajectory, increasing its movement speed and gaining organization.

If its evolution is confirmed, it would turn into a tropical storm during the course of the day or early morning on Monday.

The institute emphasized that, regardless of its development, the system will continue to cause atmospheric instability in much of Cuba, due to the combination of local factors, high levels of relative humidity, and the complex topography of the eastern region.

As a result, the persistence of scattered showers, rainfall, and numerous thunderstorms is expected, which could be strong and intense in areas of the central and eastern parts of the country, particularly in mountainous regions and areas with poor drainage.

Next update

The INSMET informed that the next update on this system will be issued at 6:00 PM this Sunday, with new details about its organization and intensity.
