The organization Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC) recently publicly denounced a case of extreme cruelty against a dog named Ron, a resident of Casablanca in the Havana municipality of Regla, who was brutally attacked by a soldier

According to the complaint, Ron was a "beloved family dog" who used to take short walks around the neighborhood but always returned home. This time, however, his outing ended in tragedy.

BAC reported that Ron was found by his owner a few blocks from home, "lying on the ground, bleeding, with three machete wounds to the head."

The alleged aggressor, identified as Julio C. Dueñas, a resident of the area and an active-duty military member, justified his act by claiming that the animal had killed his chickens.

However, members of the community and the organization itself contest this version, accusing Dueñas of repeated violence.

"This man simply unleashed his violence against a defenseless being", stated BAC, which also revealed that several witnesses claim it is not an isolated incident.

"It is not the first time he has committed a violent act. He has murdered many more... always remaining unpunished. But no more!" they asserted and demanded justice.

Demanding Justice: National and International Pressure

The outrage caused by this case has mobilized activists and citizens on social media, where posts with the hashtags "Justice for Ron" and "Stop Animal Abuse" have been shared thousands of times.

BAC, for its part, has taken concrete steps to bring the case to the relevant authorities.

In an update from September 28, they communicated that “the information about the aggressor was sent to several international agencies with the aim of ensuring that, should they attempt to leave Cuba in the future, they would not find refuge in the United States, Europe, or any other country with which we maintain a close collaborative relationship on this issue of animal abuse.”

They also announced that in the coming days they will file a formal complaint with Animal Health, in order to activate institutional mechanisms that allow for the prosecution of the aggressor.

"We will continue to inform and update every step of this process until we achieve justice and protect the lives of animals against those who threaten them," they stated.

The state of Ron: Reserved prognosis

The aggression left the dog in a delicate condition.

In an update released by BAC on September 27, they explained: "Ron had a difficult night; he even wet the bed while asleep, and in the morning he didn't want to have breakfast. The doctor warned that he may face many serious aftereffects from what he went through, which makes his recovery uncertain and still requires a lot of care."

Despite the severe clinical picture, BAC clings to a glimmer of hope: "We have a small light of hope: he ate a little and looks a bit livelier."

The organization has expressed gratitude for the community support and has asked to continue sending strength and affection, reminding that the fight for their recovery also represents a battle against impunity.

A symbol against violence

The virtual community has responded with expressions of solidarity.

BAC called for a symbolic action: “JUSTICE FOR RON. Let's all update our profile pictures on FACEBOOK AND WHATSAPP FOR RON. LET'S SHOW HOW STRONG WE ARE!!!! ENOUGH WITH ANIMAL ABUSE ALREADY."

This case not only highlights the individual brutality of an aggressor identified as a military member, but also the structural limitations of the animal protection system in Cuba, where many similar incidents go unpunished.

For BAC, the message is clear: “Because someone capable of attacking an animal with such ferocity is a danger to everyone.”

The public denunciation by BAC aims not only to seek justice for Ron but also to set a precedent in the fight against animal cruelty on the island.

In a country where animal protection legislation has progressed slowly, every highlighted case is a step towards a more empathetic and responsible society.

“Violence will never be the answer”, concluded BAC in its initial post.
