Ariely Álvarez Cabrera, the woman accused of concealing the murder of the Cuban Daylon Fleitas González, has voluntarily surrendered to the authorities in Mexico and is actively cooperating with the justice system.
This is what her lawyer asserted, who defends her innocence and claims that his client has been unjustly labeled as co-responsible for the crime.
"He escaped from the hotel and surrendered."
According to the lawyer, Álvarez did not travel willingly with her partner, the alleged material author of the crime, Alfredo Carballo González, but instead escaped from the place where he was keeping her and decided to go to the authorities.
“Ariely did not go to Mexico with her boyfriend voluntarily, but she did escape voluntarily and immediately from the hotel and bought a ticket to the airport, and from the airport, she spoke immediately with the authorities in Mexico”, she explained in an interview with Univision.
His testimony aims to dismantle the version presented by the prosecution, which claims that Álvarez actively aided in the escape following the crime that occurred on August 3 in Medley, located in the northwest of Miami-Dade County.
When questioned about the involvement of Ariely in the cleanup of the scene, the lawyer was adamant.
“We don't see any of that; we only see a wife who arrived at a place where her husband called her, and she helps him clean the car,” he stated, downplaying any criminal intent in the actions of his client.
“She is completely innocent”, he declared.
Cooperation, but without guilt
The legal defender assures that his client not only surrendered to the Mexican authorities, but has also been collaborating with U.S. justice and Interpol to facilitate the capture of Carballo, who has been a fugitive since the body of Fleitas was discovered on August 8 inside an abandoned container near his truck.
“She is helping in the process. She is cooperating. However, she does not know where her husband is. Remember, she escaped from a hotel in Mexico weeks earlier,” added the lawyer, trying to distance her from the escape plan executed by the couple after the homicide.
"We will not accept any plea agreement presented by the prosecution,” the defense attorney stated categorically, making it clear that they are preparing to confront the judicial process until they prove their version.
During the court hearing held in Miami-Dade, the attorney requested a reduction of the bail to $40,000, arguing that Álvarez has no criminal record, does not pose a flight risk, and has shown a willingness to cooperate.
However, Judge Mindy S. Glazer kept the bail at $200,000 and ordered that, if released, she would be placed under house arrest with a GPS monitor, required to surrender her passport, and subjected to a nighttime curfew.
The young woman was extradited from Mexico weeks after the crime and faces charges for complicity in concealing a murder and tampering with physical evidence, charges aimed at penalizing those who alter a crime scene or assist in evading justice.
Álvarez Cabrera was released on bail this week.
For now, the authorities continue the active search for Alfredo Carballo González, identified as the material author of the murder of Daylon Fleitas.
His capture is crucial for fully clarifying the case and determining the true level of involvement of each of the accused.
