Ron, the beagle puppy who was brutally attacked in Havana, is starting to show signs of recovery, while his owner and animal rights organizations continue to demand legal justice in a case that has generated a wave of outrage across the country.
The assault took place in Casablanca, in the Havana municipality of Regla, where public reports indicate that the dog was attacked with a machete by a man identified as Julio C. Dueñas, a resident of the area and an alleged active military personnel.
In a post made in the Facebook group Dog Adoption in Cuba, Salett Pérez, the owner of the dog, updated Ron's health status and made her stance clear.
"The prognosis is improving, his vital signs are positive, he can see, hear, smell, and is becoming the happy little dog he has always been. He is my champion," she wrote, expressing gratitude for the support and making it clear that they do not accept donations, as the family can cover the medical and food expenses for the animal.
In her message, the young woman called for justice to be served, but always through institutional channels.
"Yes, I want justice for my dog... but what I'm asking for is legal justice. That the man be held accountable under the law. I do not agree with violence. Every life matters and should be protected," she stated.
According to the organization Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC), Ron was found by his owner lying on the ground, bleeding, with three machete wounds to the head.
The aggressor claimed that the animal had killed some chickens, but witnesses and activists challenge this justification and assert that this is not the first time the man has acted violently.
"The man simply unleashed his violence against a defenseless being," BAC reported, adding that there are records of aggressive behavior by the alleged perpetrator.
The organization announced that the case has been referred to several international agencies to prevent the alleged perpetrator from evading responsibility.
It was also announced that they will file a formal complaint with Animal Health, with the aim of activating institutional mechanisms to address the matter.
BAC warned that Ron is still undergoing treatment and that, although his condition has improved, he may face serious repercussions.
"The title of this case is Justice for Ron, but it also represents the fight against impunity," they emphasized.
Meanwhile, the virtual community has reacted strongly, sharing posts under the hashtags #JusticeForRon and #StopAnimalAbuse, and organizing symbolic actions such as changing profile pictures to support the cause.
This case, beyond the painful individual fact, has once again highlighted the limitations of the animal protection system in Cuba, where many acts of aggression go unpunished.
For activists and citizens, Ron has become a symbol of resistance and the urgency of applying the law rigorously.
