Cuban opposers protested last Thursday in front of the regime's embassy in Washington against the presence of Cuban mercenaries on the side of the Russian invaders in Ukraine.

The protest was led by two activists from the Center for a Free Cuba in commemoration of the International Day of Non-Violence.

John Suárez, director of the non-governmental organization, who shared images of the event on his social media told Martí Noticias that the protest was initially to “remember Alexei Navalny, Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas, Boris Nemtsov, Orlando Zapata Tamayo... martyrs for freedom in Russia and Cuba, respectively.”

Likewise, the protesters condemned the presence of Cuban mercenaries "in Vladimir Putin's illegal war," and they demand that these be withdrawn from Ukraine and allowed to "return to Cuba, to their home."

The protest then moved to the vicinity of the Russian ambassador's residence.

Suárez called for Putin to return the Ukrainian children who have been kidnapped, echoing the request made by the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, who made the same appeal in a letter addressed to the Russian president.

Cuban Mercenaries in Ukraine

Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) recently reported that Russia has recruited at least 20,000 Cuban citizens to fight as mercenaries in the war against Ukraine.

According to Andriy Yusov, a representative of HUR, Cuba would be the primary source of foreign fighters in service of Moscow.

According to the details presented by Business Insider, based on statements from Yusov, 1,038 Cubans signed contracts with the Russian Army between June 2023 and February 2024; the average age is around 35 years, and the monthly salary offered would be about 2,000 dollars.

HUR also stated that at least 250 remained on the front after their contracts expired and that, based on available information, the mortality of hired foreigners typically occurs between 140 and 150 days after deployment.

The Ukrainian organization added that there are documents and lists with names, ages, signing dates and deaths of Cuban recruits.

Even a judicial testimony in Russia would refer to a recruiter who allegedly intervened in the enlistment of 6,000 to 7,000 people.

The spokesperson added that the Kremlin finds it advantageous to use foreign mercenaries, such as Cubans, because if a foreigner dies, there is no need to pay social benefits or face pressure from relatives within Russia.
