The Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan held a free concert at Plaza de Colón in Madrid this Sunday, as part of the official events for Hispanic Day.
In front of thousands of people, the artist not only reviewed her hits but also delivered a clear message in support of immigrants, during a particularly sensitive political moment in Spain and the United States.
Estefan, 67 years old, returned to the European stages with a powerful band of 16 musicians and a vibrant show that combined salsa, Latin pop, and messages of inclusion, as highlighted by El País.
The presentation was promoted by the Community of Madrid, presided over by Isabel Díaz Ayuso (Popular Party), and yet, some of the messages delivered by the artist were not entirely comfortable for the more conservative sectors and aligned with the postulates of U.S. President Donald Trump.
“We all know what immigrants contribute to the world. We are human beings, and we all want the same thing”, Estefan said before performing Cuba libre, one of the most emotional moments of the day.
She also recalled that her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, was welcomed in Spain before settling in Miami, a nod to her own story as a Cuban refugee.
The singer had previously criticized the immigration policy of the United States under the Trump administration, though she did not mention the president by name. This time, her words seemed directed more toward a broad audience than to any specific figure, although political interpretations were not lacking.
During the concert, her daughter, Emily Estefan, also took center stage, performing a medley dedicated to iconic women of music and openly discussing her sexual orientation. “I like women,” she stated, reinforcing the diverse and inclusive nature of the show.
Gloria Estefan took advantage of the event to present songs from her new album 'Raíces', in which she pays tribute to her Latin roots. The audience, which included many Latin American flags, particularly celebrated Mi tierra, one of her most iconic classics.
The Cuban star closed the concert with words of gratitude "to this Spanish language that unites us" and a nod to her Asturian roots from her grandfather.
With her vibrant performance, Gloria Estefan reaffirmed not only her musical relevance but also her commitment to the causes that have characterized her journey: migration, family, and respect for diversity.
