A Cuban resident in Miami went viral on TikTok after stating that "buying a house is the biggest stupidity in the world," criticizing the high costs of the real estate market in South Florida.

In the video posted by the user @la.nasa3.11, the man warns other Cubans and migrants about the financial risks of buying a home in the United States. “I've been telling you, you want to listen to me and a year later you realize you're a huge fool,” he expressed.

The Cuban questioned the advice from some real estate agents who promise quick profits from property purchases. "The realtor told you your house is worth $400,000 and tomorrow it will be worth $600,000. Look, it's better to pay rent than to pay for something that gives you nothing," he added.

He also compared the monthly expenses of a mortgage with those of renting: “Someone who bought a house for 400 thousand dollars is paying 4,000 a month. That amounts to 48,000 a year or 144,000 over three years. Out of all that, only 4,000 or 5,000 goes to the principal; the rest is interest.”

His message sparked a debate among users, many of whom agreed that the real estate market in Miami has become unaffordable for most, while others defended purchasing as a long-term investment.

The video has amassed thousands of views on TikTok and has reignited the debate over whether it's better to buy or rent a home in Miami, one of the most expensive cities in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Real Estate Market in Miami and Alternatives in the U.S.

Why do some consider that buying a house in Miami is a bad decision?

The real estate market in Miami is criticized for its high costs and associated financial risks. According to a Cuban resident in Miami, home prices are inflated and the monthly mortgage payments do not adequately contribute to the principal, as most goes towards interest. Additionally, many real estate agents promise quick profits that do not always materialize.

Is it more affordable to live in other states in the U.S. than in Miami?

Yes, there are states that are more affordable than Miami, such as Oklahoma and Michigan, where the cost of living is significantly lower. In Oklahoma, for example, monthly expenses may be decreased due to lower rent and other associated costs. In Michigan, you can also find more affordable housing options.

What are the advantages of renting instead of buying a house in Miami?

Renting can be a more flexible and economical option in the short term in Miami. It avoids the financial burden of a high mortgage and allows individuals to quickly adapt to changes in their economic or job situation without the long-term commitment that comes with ownership. Furthermore, renting can be more feasible in a volatile market where property prices fluctuate.
