A man was stabbed to death on Tuesday afternoon in the town of Falcón, in the municipality of Placetas, Villa Clara, following an argument with another neighbor over land disputes.

The victim, identified as Didier Valdivia, was attacked with a sharp weapon during the altercation and died shortly after at a local medical center.

The information was initially revealed by crime reporter Niover Licea, who noted that the incident caused "great shock among the local residents."

According to their report, Didier Valdivia had a disagreement with another man, Greidy Faunde (later identified as Greidel Faunde, around 50 years old), with whom he had longstanding personal differences "over issues related to farms."

"They both initially fought with fists, but minutes later the situation spiraled out of control: Greidy used a knife and inflicted serious injuries that tragically cost him his life," Licea wrote.

Despite being rushed to the municipal polyclinic, Didier could not survive his injuries.

Later on, in an update about the case, the reporter added that the tension between the two men was well-known in the area and that previous confrontations had already occurred for the same reasons.

He also stated that "the police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident," although at that moment no official arrests had been confirmed.

Licea also took the opportunity to alert about the increase in violent incidents in the country, particularly in rural areas, where—according to her—“social tensions, lack of resources, and impunity have created an increasingly unsafe environment for citizens.”

The digital medium La Tijera published a report with practically coinciding information, adding a single relevant detail: the alleged aggressor is in police custody.

"Two Destroyed Families": The Impact on the Community

The news sparked a wave of reactions from neighbors, relatives, and social media users, who not only mourned the death of Didier Valdivia but also recognized the devastating impact of the incident on both families.

A resident who said she knows both parties involved well expressed:

“I know both of them. I can't say that one was better than the other. Both were good people who ended up in a tragic situation during a heated argument. Didier, a man in the prime of life, an incredible loyal friend. There will be no words of comfort for his wife and children. Well-loved by all. Two families destroyed, very sad.”

Regarding the aggressor, he added:

“Greidel, a hardworking guajiro who resorted to violence in the heat of an argument rather than to the saving word. Also, his family was destroyed and marked by misfortune.”

Those who worked with Didier remember him as a calm and honest man.

"He was my coworker, a calm and kind young man. My condolences to his family. Justice for the murderer," wrote a woman.

Another neighbor remarked, "My condolences to that family. What a pain for that wife, mother, and children. We are going to miss you, champ. You were a son to me. A hug to the sky."

As the story spread, many people began to express their outrage at what they see as another symptom of increasing violence, due to the lack of institutional mechanisms to mediate conflicts.

A phrase repeated in several posts summarizes this sentiment: "All of this over a piece of land. Now one is in jail and the other in the cemetery. Neither can enjoy the parcel of land."

For others, the issue lies in the normalization of violence as the only means of resolution.

"Cuba has become a slaughterhouse. Something unprecedented. Now the killers serve a sentence and go back out to kill. Men no longer know how to talk; they resolve everything with weapons," added an internet user harshly.

Another user recalled how social norms have changed in the country:

"I remember that when I was young, it was prohibited to carry edged weapons, and it was punishable by law. That's why there are so many deaths now. It's very common to walk around with machetes and knives, and if there's a problem, there are no fists involved, just stabbings and machete blows. The law no longer exists for that."

Unrestrained violence

This new murder in Placetas not only leaves one fatality but also two broken families and a community marked by pain and helplessness.

What happened brings attention back to the rise of personal conflicts with fatal outcomes, particularly in rural areas where land disputes, lack of effective mediation, and the deterioration of social fabric create extremes such as those experienced in Falcón.

Didier Valdivia was killed in a fight that should have never escalated this far. His name joins the list of Cubans who have lost their lives in a country where violence is on the rise and justice comes late or not at all.
