The deadline to apply for Spanish nationality under the Grandchildren's Law is coming to an end

More than 107,000 Cubans have applied for Spanish citizenship under the Grandchildren's Law. The consulate in Havana will not extend the deadline or accept applications without the CSV, leading to complaints about irregularities.

The deadline to apply for Spanish nationality under the Law of Democratic Memory (LMD), known as the "Grandchildren's Law," concludes on October 22, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (local time), as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain.

The regulations, approved in 2022, have allowed more than 107,000 Cubans to begin the process of obtaining Spanish citizenship through family ancestry.

The Embassy of Spain in Havana, the only authority authorized to process applications in Cuba, reiterated that there will be no extensions or exceptions. Only applicants who have received the Secure Verification Code (CSV) will be able to submit their files after the deadline. Without that electronic document, the procedures will be invalidated.

However, dozens of Cubans reported irregularities such as technical failures, arbitrary rejections, and delays in the credentialing system. Some claim that, despite having requested their appointment on time, they never received the CSV, leaving them out of the process.

"We feel helpless," express several affected individuals who accuse the Consulate of a lack of transparency and communication.

Uncertainty is growing among thousands of Cuban families who saw Spanish nationality as a way to reunite with their loved ones or seek a better future outside the Island.
