A small-scale fire was reported this Tuesday at the funeral home "La Nueva", just a few blocks from the city center of Guantánamo.
The fire originated in a chapel of the funeral home, located on Ramón Pinto Street, between Máximo Gómez and Luz Caballero, at a time when several wakes were taking place in the facility.
Internauts shared on social media images of the flames in one of the business's locations and the thick smoke they produced.
According to citizen reports, the fire was caused by an electrical failure. “The chapels were filled with bodies. They warned yesterday about a short circuit and they ignored it,” denounced the singer-songwriter and influencer Saúl Manuel on his Facebook page.
So far, the official media in Guantánamo have not published information about the incident or the material damages it caused.
Two weeks ago, a small fire was also reported in Guantánamo at an old distillery that is no longer in operation, located in Argeo Martínez, in the municipality of Manuel Tames.
Days later, a massive fire broke out at the lobster processing plant of the Industrial Fishing Company La Coloma, in Pinar del Río, the main seafood processor in Cuba. There were no casualties, but significant material losses occurred as high-tech machinery was damaged.
The number of fires reported in state entities in recent weeks is concerning.
One of the most serious incidents occurred in the fuel oil generators of the Antonio Maceo Thermoelectric Power Plant (Renté) in Santiago de Cuba at the end of September. Although no one was injured, the large-scale fire added more tension to the already complex situation at the thermoelectric plant during those days, with several units out of service that left the plant unable to provide a stable contribution to the National Electroenergetic System (SEN).
At that time, a fire at the Fuel Oil 2 Distributed Generation Site in Los Güiros, in the municipality of Guantánamo, raised alarms once again about the fragile state of the Cuban electrical system.
In the same week, an electrical malfunction ignited a fire that consumed a jeep in the basement or garage of the Banco de Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC) in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín. The Fire Department and local residents were able to control the blaze before it spread to other areas of the property.
A gas explosion at the Brisas del Mar hotel in Caibarién, Villa Clara, left three people injured and caused a fire that was extinguished by the firefighters.
