A young Cuban identified as Heidy León Domínguez lost her life on Thursday night in a violent assault in Havana, after trying to defend her bicitaxi, the means of support through which she provided for her family, according to friends and acquaintances who reported on social media.
The incident, which occurred under circumstances still under investigation, also left two women seriously injured who were with the victim at the time of the attack.
“Hermanos, I don't even know how to share this terrible news. Last night my friend Heidy León Domínguez was murdered; she fought like a lion defending her bicitaxi. Two girls who were with her are also critically injured,” wrote her friend Dyango Pulido Vives, clearly distraught by the tragedy.
According to posts shared by acquaintances, Heidy was a working mother of an 8-year-old girl and used the bike taxi as her primary source of income to support her family.
The death of the young woman has sparked a wave of outrage on social media, where users are denouncing the increase in violence and insecurity on the streets of Havana and other provinces of the country.
"Another victim taken from us due to the immense violence unleashed in the capital. We demand justice for Heidy and that those responsible face the consequences of their actions," expressed neighbors and friends in a statement from Denuncia Pública shared on social media.
Until now, the Cuban authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident, nor have there been any reports of arrests related to the crime.
The official silence stands in contrast to the rising number of citizen reports about thefts, assaults, and violent attacks in various regions of the country.
In recent months, the cases of assaults on self-employed workers, delivery people, cyclists, and pedicab drivers have multiplied, victims of a context of economic deterioration, social crisis, and lack of effective police protection.
