The Boca de Jauco bridge collapsed this Friday in the Maisí municipality due to the rains associated with Tropical Storm Melissa, leaving the area disconnected from the rest of the province.
According to reports from local authorities, the break left the area cut off from the rest of the province and isolated a significant part of the popular council of Boca de Jauco.
The collapse of the bridge completely restricts vehicle traffic and disrupts the road connection from Maisí to the province and to areas within the municipality itself.
The accumulated rainfall in recent days has undermined and damaged the main access roads , even though the day started out with apparent calm.
After the collapse, safety controls were implemented to prevent "indiscipline" and accidents, and the call to comply with the guidelines of the Civil Defense was reiterated.
The collapse occurs in the context of preventive actions due to the proximity of Melissa.
The progressive deterioration of the road, along with several days of rain, led to the structural failure of the bridge, according to the municipal update.
The disruption of traffic affects the supply, the transportation of personnel, and the emergency response within the municipality.
The authorities emphasized that, until further notice, all types of transportation have limited access, so it is advised to avoid unnecessary travel and respect the safety perimeters.
The tropical storm Melissa keeps the residents of eastern Cuba on edge as the country faces one of the worst crises in recent years, with power outages exceeding 18 hours a day, lack of communication, and limited official information about the weather phenomenon.
The National Defense Council of Cuba issued this Friday the Information Note No. 1 about the tropical storm, which is continuing to strengthen in the western Caribbean and could become a category 3 hurricane in the coming days before impacting the island.
The entity declared the Informative Phase for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguín, Las Tunas, and Camagüey starting at 2:00 p.m. today, so that authorities can begin preparations for the meteorological emergency.
