The United States evacuates areas of the Guantanamo Naval Base due to the threat from Melissa

The authorities announced the temporary closure of several outdoor facilities due to storm monitoring in the area. Only a few centers will remain open while weather conditions are being monitored.

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Office at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base reported this Friday on temporary changes to its programs and services due to adverse weather conditions affecting the region.

According to the , and “due to the current storm watch,” the entity has decided to immediately close all activities and outdoor spaces to ensure the safety of the community.

The affected facilities include:

  • All outdoor programs
  • The Marina
  • The golf course
  • The Auto Skills Center
  • The Lyceums
  • The outdoor pools
  • The sports fields

MWR also confirmed the cancellation of the events scheduled for this weekend, including Trunk or Treat and Fitness & Figure. However, the Denich Fitness Center, Liberty Center, and all food and beverage outlets on base will remain open.

The authorities stated that they will continue to monitor the weather conditions and will provide updates if new measures are necessary.

Heavy rains are affecting Guantánamo and have caused flooding in several regions of eastern Cuba. Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to become a hurricane this Saturday and could make landfall on the island on Wednesday as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane.
