The Cuban activist Amelia Calzadilla expressed her deep fear this Tuesday regarding the imminent arrival of Hurricane Melissa to Cuba, a Category 5 phenomenon currently crossing over Jamaica with sustained winds of 295 kilometers per hour.

In a post on her social media, Calzadilla acknowledged that “she had never felt so much fear about a hurricane,” not only due to the intensity of the weather event but also because of the extreme vulnerability of the country.

"My thoughts are now with Cuba, especially with the East," said the activist, recalling that the country is going through a severe economic, political, and social crisis, leaving millions of Cubans without basic resources to cope with the impact of this hurricane.

“How can we confront this battle against nature when they have nothing? There is no food, there is no drinking water, they are not healthy, there is no power, there is no communication,” warned Amelia, visibly concerned about the situation of the inhabitants of Eastern Cuba.

The hurricane Melissa could make landfall at some point in the eastern provinces on the night of this Tuesday, directly impacting Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, and Holguín, with torrential rains, storm surges, and intense winds capable of causing landslides, flooding, and massive destruction.

Calzadilla urged Cubans to “take the warnings seriously” and seek shelter while it is still possible. “There will come a time when you won’t even know where the hurricane is,” he warned, reminding that the apparent calm of the eye of the storm can be deadly.

His message has been widely shared on social media, where many users agree that Cuba is facing the wrath of nature at the worst moment in its recent history, marked by blackouts, hunger, and despair.
