While in the East they are evacuating due to the hurricane, in the West they are marching for Camilo

In Cienfuegos and Havana, hundreds of students and workers took part this Tuesday in marches and tributes for Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, amid a national crisis and despite criticism from the local population.

While the eastern part of Cuba prepares for the impact of Hurricane Melissa with evacuations and emergency measures, the regime held multiple commemorative events this Tuesday for the 66th anniversary of the disappearance of Camilo Cienfuegos, one of the main commanders of the revolution.

The images shared by the Perlavisión telecenter show students marching down the Paseo del Prado to the Malecón of Cienfuegos to lay flowers in the bay, as part of the traditional "Flower for Camilo."

“The younger generations were the main participants in the tribute to Commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán,” the state media published alongside videos of the parade, where children and teenagers can be seen marching under the sun, in stark contrast to the mass evacuations taking place in the east of the country due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Melissa.

From the capital, the state-owned company Transtur Cuba also joined the tribute with a message on social media: "From the Central Office, we pay tribute to Camilo: an example of dedication and humility. His legacy is measured not only in achievements but in the warmth with which he led", they stated on their official account.

The images from the marches in Cienfuegos and Havana sparked criticism and outrage on social media, where numerous users highlighted the government's disconnection from the country's reality.

While in the east thousands of families are evacuating due to Hurricane Melissa, and the government acknowledges that food provisions in evacuation centers are inadequate, in the west the Communist Party is organizing parades and political events.

"Instead of addressing the health of the people, they continue with those marches that solve nothing. There is no food, no medicine, no electricity... but there are marches," wrote an internet user. Another added: "On the 28th, a powerful hurricane will be hitting the eastern region, and in Havana, supposedly one hundred thousand locals will be marching. Just the things from Narnia."

The contrast between both realities —the evacuation in the east and the propaganda in the west— has once again highlighted the national crisis.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States confirmed that Hurricane Melissa will make landfall on Wednesday morning near Uvero–Chivirico, in Santiago de Cuba, with sustained winds exceeding 220 kilometers per hour.

The provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma remain under hurricane alert, and evacuations are progressing in the coastal areas.

The regime announced the sale of a pound of rice in Granma, but assured that power outages will continue during the passage of the hurricane.
