The intense rains and strong winds caused by Hurricane Melissa resulted in severe damage in the province of Guantánamo, where there are reports of damages to the electrical and telecommunications networks, as well as numerous homes. However, there were no reported loss of life or injuries or missing persons, according to the state broadcaster Radio Guantánamo.
The weather phenomenon that severely impacted eastern Cuba disrupted the fiber optic connection that links the province with the rest of the country. After hours of total disconnection, the service was restored early on Friday morning.
The largest impacts are concentrated in the municipalities of Caimanera, Niceto Pérez, El Salvador, Yateras, and the provincial capital, where landslides, fallen trees, and partial or total damage to light-roofed homes have been reported, as well as to educational and health institutions.
Despite the extent of the material damages, the heavy rainfall provided partial relief in the water crisis affecting the region. The reservoirs reached 98% of their total capacity, and the La Yaya dam even began to release water.
"Melissa lashed the Eastern Highlands with strong winds and enough rainfall to significantly improve the situation of the reservoirs," reported Radio Guantánamo.
Local authorities continue to assess the damage and carry out recovery efforts in affected areas, particularly regarding the electrical grid and communications.
