More than 500 people from the communities of Estrada and San Francisco, in the Urbano Noris municipality of Holguín, were evacuated due to the risk of flooding from the discharge of the Camazán dam.

The preventive evacuation began at 2:45 AM this Saturday due to the controlled discharge of the Camazán dam and the threat of heavy rains associated with a cold front in the eastern region, reported the local broadcaster Radio SG La voz del Azúcar.

A total of 356 people were relocated to the provincial capital and 154 to the homes of relatives in Urbano Noris.

"The evacuation was carried out considering the location of these communities downstream from the Camazán dam in the Baguano Municipality, which is undergoing controlled relief, along with the forecast of intense rainfall between Saturday and Sunday due to the influence of a nearly stationary cold front,” the information adds.

The Estrada community had been cut off for over 32 hours by rail and road, which added complexity to the evacuation operations, the note concludes.

Cauto River

This evacuation takes place hours after the crisis caused by the rise of the Cauto River, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which left the community of the same name isolated in Granma.

Families in the municipality of Río Cauto reported that the water continues to rise rapidly and demanded “real information” and immediate assistance in light of a situation they describe as “unprecedented,” with streets and homes flooded and areas cut off.

The messages, spread on social media, question the assertion that "everything was under control" and warn that "there will be nothing left in Río Cauto" if reinforcements and basic supplies do not arrive.

Hours after the calls for help, a special rail operation began to evacuate residents isolated by the floods in the Río Cauto popular council.
