The Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba announced this Sunday that the volunteers from the Parish Caritas of El Cobre distributed 695 food rations to families affected by Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage in that area of the eastern province.
According to the publication by the archdiocese on its profile, 120 volunteers, organized into 29 mission houses—eight more than the previous day—transformed their homes into centers for the preparation and distribution of food under the coordination of the Catholic Church.
The organizers of Cáritas thanked the supporters and highlighted that they maintain documented records of the food provided and distributed at each center.
“All the glory belongs to God,” they stated in their message shared on social media.
El Cobre was one of the areas most affected by Hurricane Melissa. The rains caused a landslide that trapped 17 people, who were later rescued by emergency teams.
Additionally, they caused severe damage to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity, one of the most iconic temples in Cuba.
In recent days, following Marco Rubio's offer of assistance, Secretary of State of the United States, the Catholic Church has gained prominence in ensuring that these donations reach the victims of Hurricane Melissa, without going through the hands of the Cuban regime.
The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba confirmed this Sunday that U.S. aid, valued at three million dollars, will be channeled through the Catholic Church and not through the Cuban State.
