A Cuban resident in the United States, known on TikTok as @williamacelia, shared a video that has sparked mixed emotions among users. In the footage, she displays a suitcase filled with medicines and food that she will send to the victims of Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage in eastern Cuba. "I am not an influencer, but I also contribute my part for my people in Cuba", she wrote about the video, which went viral in just a few hours.
In the comments, several users expressed their distrust of the donations sent to the Island. "I don't send donations because I don't know whose hands they will end up in; that regime takes everything," wrote one user.
The author of the video responded firmly: “I don’t send it to the government, I send it to a friend to distribute it, because I’m not in the loop; I don’t help the government, I help those in need directly.” And to those who doubted her gesture, she added: “I just sent it in my nephew's name. Sorry, Díaz-Canel, that doesn’t even get the faintest whiff of foreign money.”
Although there were some skeptical remarks, most were supportive and expressed gratitude. "What a beautiful gesture," "God bless you," and "I wish everyone would do the same" can be found among the hundreds of messages celebrating her initiative. The Cuban also explained that, although she does not live on the Island, she maintains a strong connection with the people she left behind: "They shared their misery with me; I cannot abandon them now."
Its story has become an example of the solidarity spirit of the Cuban exile, which time and again seeks ways to lend a hand to its own. While the government promises impossible aid, many prefer to rely on gestures like this one, simple yet genuine, that reach directly to those who need it most.
