A new case of domestic violence shocked the city of Hialeah in Miami-Dade County this Thursday when a Cuban man murdered his wife, severely injured his mother-in-law, and then took his own life.
The authorities have confirmed that it was a case of murder-suicide that took place at the Lago Grande apartment complex.
A tragedy within a Cuban family
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 2:00 PM in the 2700 block of West 67th Place, within the mentioned residential complex.
A relative of the alleged shooter was the one who alerted 911 after receiving a warning from the attacker before the crime was committed.
Upon their arrival, the officers forced entry into the residence and found three people injured by gunshot wounds: the assailant, his wife, and his mother-in-law.
The wife, identified by neighbors as Aileen Delgado Armas, died at the scene alongside her husband, who allegedly took his own life after committing the crime.
Aileen's mother was transferred in critical condition to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Until the night of this Thursday, the police had not officially released the names of those involved, but testimonies from neighbors have helped reconstruct some key elements of the story.
A life marked by struggle and a tragic ending
The residents of Lago Grande agreed that Aileen Delgado Armas was a woman of Cuban origin, originally from Holguín.
She had survived cancer and was in the process of divorcing her husband.
“She and her mother were gathering their belongings to leave the house”, reported a neighbor to Telemundo 51, suggesting that the timing of the attack coincided with an attempt to escape a possibly violent or tense situation at home.
Both Delgado and the aggressor had a son together, a seven-year-old boy who was not at the residence at the time of the shooting. The child was at school and, according to reports from Local 10 News, has been placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
The testimonies from the community reflect a mix of pain, disbelief, and concern.
"It's truly heartbreaking for me because I feel bad for the families who lost someone, and I really pray that they are okay," expressed a neighbor to Local 10.
Several residents mentioned that the nearby school was closed as a precaution due to the sound of gunfire.
A witness also reported that the woman who was airlifted "was covered in blood," as noted by NBC Miami.
Ongoing investigation
Lieutenant Eddie Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Hialeah police, stated that authorities are continuing to investigate the details that led to this tragedy.
The Hialeah police have stated that they classify the case as a "domestic homicide-suicide incident," although they are still trying to clarify the specific motive behind the attack.
As of the closing of this report, there is no additional information regarding the case.
