After a lifetime on the island, a Cuban grandmother aged 85 years was able to fulfill one of her greatest dreams: to leave Cuba and reunite with her granddaughter in El Salvador.
The emotional reunion was shared on social media by her granddaughter, who couldn't hold back her tears upon welcoming her at the airport.
"Thus was the reunion with my grandmother. Arriving in El Salvador, land of freedom, from Cuba", wrote the young woman on her TikTok account, along with a video that quickly went viral among Cubans inside and outside the island.
In the images, the elderly woman is seen with a smile full of emotion and hope, while her granddaughter runs to embrace her amidst the applause of those present.
The story has touched thousands of users, not only for the family love it reflects but also for the context in which it occurs. More and more Cubans are seeking to leave the country every day, pushed by the economic crisis, the lack of freedoms, and the shortages that affect everyone, especially the elderly.
Meanwhile, on the island, thousands of elderly people continue to dream of a different future, where they can live their final years with dignity, without having to rely on remittances or the scarcity imposed by the regime.
