Cuban content creator Yexela González (@yexelagonzlez), based in Madrid, touched her followers by explaining the reasons that led her to leave Cuba with her family.
In an emotional video posted on her social media, Yexela responded to a comment from a user questioning why millions of Cubans flee their homeland without fighting against the regime.
"I cannot lend my voice to speak for all Cubans because I believe that if I did, it would be like speaking as a politician from my country, and believe me, that will never happen. However, I can speak about my reasons. I am one of those who fled, one of those who was not brave, one of those who jumped from the sinking ship into the water," she expressed.
In her testimony, she acknowledged that she made the painful decision to emigrate to protect her children's future.
"Cuba took away my childhood, which was not happy. It took away my best years of life, but if there is one thing I cannot give to Cuba, it is my children's childhood," González stated.
He described the situation on the island as "a many-headed monster" that poses a threat to those who attempt to confront it.
"Confronting that monster puts you in real danger," he said, referring to the repression of the Cuban regime against those who think differently from the government's policies.
The influencer admitted to feeling torn between the guilt of having fled and the relief of providing a better life for her children. “I am expendable to everyone, except in the lives of my kids. I am their universe, and I would do nothing that would risk being present in their lives,” she confessed.
Yexela invited other Cubans to share their own reasons for emigrating, with the aim of "shedding more light on an issue that continues to hurt thousands of families" separated by the crisis in Cuba.
