The President of the United States Donald Trump stated this Sunday that each American will receive a bonus of at least $2,000 thanks to tariffs.
“People who are against tariffs are fools! Now we are the richest and most respected country in the world, almost without inflation and with a record stock market price,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
The bond will exclude those with the highest incomes: "A dividend of at least 2000 dollars per person will be paid (not including high-income individuals!) to everyone," he specified.
Trump painted an encouraging economic picture of nearly paid-off debt, 401k retirement plans "at their highest level," and "record investment in the United States, with plants and factories springing up everywhere."
He also defended the legality of the tariffs in the face of skepticism from the Supreme Court, which is examining the president's authority to impose them.
"The President of the United States has the permission (and full approval of Congress!) to stop all trade with a foreign country (which is far more burdensome than a tariff!), and grant licenses to a foreign country, but he does not have permission to impose a simple tariff on a foreign country, not even for national security reasons. That is NOT what our great founders had in mind! This is ridiculous!” he said in another post.
"Has the Supreme Court of the United States not been informed? What the hell is going on?" he added, referring to what Trump called the mass return of companies to American soil.
At the end of August, a Washington appeals court declared the majority of the tariffs that the president imposed through executive orders illegal, a key pillar of his economic strategy.
The ruling questioned the constitutionality of the tariffs, arguing that Trump acted outside legal boundaries by invoking emergency powers to impose taxes on imports.
The Trump administration filed a petition with the Supreme Court, awaiting its decision.
