Nothing illustrates the decline of the Cuban regime better than the deplorable state of its hospitals and health centers. This Wednesday, the Calixto García Hospital in Havana was once again the scene of an incident that reveals the extent of the collapse of the healthcare system, as part of the ceiling in one of its wards caved in.
According to Martí Noticias, the collapse occurred around six-thirty in the morning at the entrance of the High Clinical Room, causing panic among patients and their companions who were still asleep when pieces of the ceiling began to fall.
"The patients were still sleeping, people got scared and started to get anxious," reported a witness of the incident who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals.
The collapse affected the area of the reception where the nurses work and dislodged part of the upper floor and ceiling, according to images sent to the newsroom of the outlet.
The witness explained that the room is in very poor structural condition and that the deterioration is visible in every corner.
"In the restrooms, there is no light, it's completely dark, it's a tremendous mess; the walls have holes, and the rebar and exposed pipes are visible," she pointed out
The Calixto García Hospital, one of the most emblematic in the country, has reported multiple partial collapses, leaks, and power outages, and complaints about a lack of hygiene and medical equipment are constant on social media and independent news outlets.
Cuba is experiencing one of the worst health crises in its recent history, with overcrowded hospitals, a shortage of medications, outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya, and oropouche, and a healthcare system lacking the resources and personnel needed to respond to the emergency.
While the regime maintains its rhetoric about the "medical power," the reality is that thousands of Cubans avoid going to hospitals due to the risks posed by poor structural conditions and the lack of timely care in a system that was once a symbol of propaganda and is now a reflection of ruin.
In 2023, part of the false ceiling of the post-operative room at the Calixto García Hospital in Havana collapsed and fell among the patients admitted in the room of this institution, causing alarm among the patients.
"Today is the second time that pieces of the ceiling have fallen in the post-operative room of Calixto García in Havana. Tiles from the false ceiling have fallen. The first time was three weeks ago when some debris fell on a doctor and a patient," reported a user identified as Diarmuid on X.
In 2021, a piece of the roof of the Calixto García Hospital in Havana fell and this time onto a patient.
