The justification for the community officials is based on the state of the cemetery in Camagüey, but their delayed response does not erase the neglect

The Community Services Company speaks of "receptivity," but citizens' comments reveal outrage and total distrust. The criticisms detail years of neglect, theft, desecrations, and an administrative chaos without answers. The collapse of the cemetery occurs amid a health and funeral crisis that the government continues to downplay.

The Management Council of the Provincial Company of Communal Services of Camagüey assured that it is working "with complete receptiveness" on the organization and transformation of the city's cemetery

The post on Facebook regarding the alleged "transformation" of the cemetery immediately sparked citizen complaints that highlight years of neglect, serious irregularities, and deterioration that has reached critical levels amid an ongoing funeral and health crisis.

"Are they being shameless?" wrote a user.

Another commentator was more direct: "With total receptiveness? It will be with total shame. This is a situation that has worsened over the years."

The criticisms outlined a list of issues that residents consider unavoidable, such as unpunished desecrations, thefts of marble and bronze, urban violations, usurpation of administrative premises, and illegal sale of vaults for 30,000 pesos.

This is compounded by the vandalism of the graves of veteran mambises, threats against the staff trying to protect the heritage, an exhumation room in deplorable conditions, and the lack of digitization of the funeral records.

For many, there is no minimum guarantee of order, respect, or institutional control.

The complaints arise after weeks of outrage over images depicting stacked coffins in hallways, open vaults, and exposed human remains.

Videos and images shared by neighbors described the lack of space to bury the deceased: “The corpses are decaying there, without a cover or anything… four bodies in each grave.”

Others warned of the health risk: “When those bodies start to release gases, it will be a bomb.”

The deterioration of the cemetery is not new. Previous reports mentioned stolen tombstones, overgrown weeds, destroyed vaults, and remains visible.

The situation is worsening amid a national funeral crisis marked by the breakdown of the provincial crematorium, the collapse of hospitals, and reports of corpses being transported in trucks due to a lack of funeral vehicles.

For many citizens, the image of the cemetery encapsulates the widespread institutional collapse. As one user succinctly put it: “Neither the living nor the dead have peace in this country.”
