The Spanish National Police has requested that the Cuban authorities intensify surveillance on Martiño Ramos Soto, the professor from Orense who was convicted of “sadistically” assaulting a minor student and fled before entering prison.
Ramos, 50 years old, was a member of the Galician political party En Marea. He was located in Havana, where he has been residing since July, and now he is among the ten most wanted fugitives in Spain.
There is no active extradition treaty between Cuba and Spain, but the authorities of both countries maintain diplomatic and police contacts to facilitate the delivery.
Europa Press reported that the Provincial Court of Ourense formally requested the extradition of Martiño Ramos Soto on October 31, after confirming his whereabouts in the Cuban capital through police sources.
Ramos escaped from Spain using his own passport and a planned route that included Portugal, Brazil, and Peru before arriving in Cuba. "His escape was carefully prepared," admit the investigators, who fear that the pedophile may attempt to escape again if surveillance on the island is not strengthened.
In Cuba, the convicted man has been presenting himself as "Martín Soto" for months and working as a documentary photographer in the Havana neighborhood of El Vedado, where he frequents galleries and cafes.
His social media posts portray a peaceful life, far removed from his past as a teacher and political activist in Galicia.
Martiño Ramos Soto was for repeatedly abusing a 12-year-old student whom he manipulated and assaulted over several years. The ruling emphasized the “cruelty and persistence” of the abuses, which were committed under the guise of a trusting and supportive relationship.
The National Police of Spain has requested that the Cuban authorities keep the fugitive under close surveillance while the extradition request is being processed.
Cuban state media have not reported on the complaint regarding this case nor have they confirmed the arrest of this fugitive from justice in Havana.
