The lawyer Travis Walker, representing West Palm Beach resident Joseph Manzaro, issued a public apology to Emilio and Gloria Estefan after a U.S. court dismissed the lawsuit against them and sanctioned Walker himself for filing "meritless" and "beyond implausible" claims.
In a video posted by Emilio Estefan himself on Instagram, the lawyer acknowledged that he should never have taken the case to court and that his actions caused unnecessary harm to the reputation of the Cuban-American couple.
“As you know, the lawsuit has been dismissed, and the court has sanctioned my behavior by stating that my claims were unfounded,” Walker admitted at the beginning of the video.
"This result reflects what I should have recognized from the beginning: the accusations were unfounded and I should never have made them. I deeply regret my decision...", he continued.
The attorney, with offices on Florida's Treasure Coast, publicly acknowledged that the sanctions imposed by the judge were "appropriate" and took full responsibility for his "improper conduct."
"I want you to know that I am sincerely sorry for what I did. There is no excuse for it. I assure you that nothing like this will happen again," he added.
Walker’s apologies add to the legal episode that had generated outrage and surprise in the Estefan family, after Manzaro claimed that, a decade ago, he had been transferred from a party at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mansion to a residence then owned by the Estefans, via a supposed “secret tunnel.”
In August, the U.S. Court deemed the case as "frivolous" and indicated that the existence of that tunnel was technically impossible due to the artificial nature of Star Island, which was built on dredged land. According to the ruling, it is not feasible to excavate deeply without reaching water.
Furthermore, it was determined that none of the accusations directly linked Emilio Estefan to the alleged events and disproved other claims made by the plaintiff, including the presence of celebrities who, according to public records, were not even in Miami that day.
Emilio Estefan: "We cannot believe everything we read."
Along with the video, the music producer shared a message reflecting on how easily misinformation can spread on social media.
"This video reminds us that we cannot believe everything we read or hear. In these times of the internet and social media, news spreads quickly and often is not true," he wrote. "It is our responsibility to defend the truth and demand it. It's a real shame!"
The Estefan family previously announced that they will take legal action to seek compensation for the damage caused to their reputation.
With this public apology, the case seems to be coming to a close, although there remains the mark of how a baseless accusation can escalate to the courts and impact the personal and professional lives of figures widely recognized by the Cuban community both within and outside the United States.
