An accident that occurred at kilometer 115 of the National Highway, heading towards Havana, fortunately resulted in only material damage after the driver involved fell asleep at the wheel.
According to user Rafael Socorro, who posted images of the incident in the ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES group for more experience and fewer victims on Facebook, the driver lost control, crossed into the other lane, and then returned to their lane, where they ultimately collided with a tree. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported.
Socorro accompanied the report with a warning message: “Family, let’s not go out sleepy. This date is very tough. Greetings to everyone.”
Among the comments, it is reported that there were no fatalities.
A reality that goes beyond the human factor
Although in this case the driver's fatigue was decisive, accidents in Cuba cannot be analyzed solely from an individual responsibility perspective. Experts and citizens agree that the incidence of accidents on the roads is closely linked to:
The poor condition of the vehicles, many of which are outdated, with makeshift parts and insufficient maintenance.
The poor road lighting, especially on long stretches of the National Highway, central roads, and rural areas.
The increasing deterioration of the roads, with deep potholes, lack of signage, and sections that are completely eroded.
These conditions turn any error—no matter how minor—into a greater risk and multiply the chances of a serious accident. The road infrastructure in Cuba has gone years without proper maintenance, amid a crisis that affects transportation, financing, and the availability of materials.
