Pope Leon XIV advises Trump to apply "economic pressures" and avoid intervention in Venezuela

Aboard the papal plane, Pope Leo XIV affirmed this Tuesday that "it is always better to seek ways of dialogue, even through economic pressures," to promote change in Venezuela, rather than resorting to threats or military actions as proposed by President Donald Trump.

During his return from Lebanon, the pontiff warned of the risk of a possible "operation, even invading Venezuelan territory," and emphasized that Washington's positions "change frequently."

He noted that the Catholic Church, through the episcopal conference and the nuncio in Caracas, is working to "calm the situation for the good of the people, because it is they who suffer and not the authorities."

The United States maintains a naval and air deployment in the Caribbean Sea, near Venezuela, under the pretext of combating drug trafficking. Washington has linked President Nicolás Maduro with the Cartel of the Suns, which was designated a terrorist group on November 24.

Days earlier, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration urged pilots to exercise extreme caution when flying over Venezuela, and Trump warned of a possible complete closure of Venezuelan airspace, raising tensions in the region.
