A group of migrants detained at the facility known as Alligator Alcatraz in Florida has begun a hunger strike since this Wednesday, as reported by Cuban journalist Javier Díaz on Facebook.

Among the protesters is the Cuban Luis Fernández, who has been in detention for 35 days and, according to reports, suffers from a serious medical condition as he has only one kidney. His family has called for his immediate release due to the risks posed by his health status.

Fernández, who had been residing in the United States for three decades, presented himself to immigration authorities each year as part of the control process mandated by a standing deportation order.

The hunger strike, which is believed to have begun as a protest against prolonged detentions and the conditions of the center, aims to draw the attention of immigration authorities and human rights organizations to the situation of those being held.

So far, there has been no official statement from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding the protest or the medical condition of the mentioned Cuban.
