The direct flight connection between Germany and Cuba was reestablished last Wednesday with aircraft from the Spanish airline Plus Ultra.
“Last night, December 3, the direct air connection between Germany and Cuba was restored with the operation of a Frankfurt-Holguín-Havana flight,” reported on Facebook the Minister of Transportation of the Cuban regime, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila.
"The route will have 2 weekly flights departing on Wednesdays from Frankfurt to the city of Holguín and on Saturdays from Frankfurt to Havana," added the official, who did not mention the name of the airline that would provide the service.
Rodríguez Dávila stated that the "flights are the result of the collaborative efforts of our aviation system with the Ministry of Tourism and its international partners."
In November of last year, it had already been revealed that after more than two decades without flying to Germany, the state airline Cubana de Aviación would resume, at the end of the year, the direct connection between Havana and Frankfurt with aircraft leased from this Spanish airline, which has Venezuelans in its management and financial and corporate ties to the Maduro regime.
The measure was announced after the German airline Condor notified the cancellation of all its operations to Cuba, starting in May 2025.
In August, the German Office for Trade and Investment Promotion in Cuba (AHK) confirmed that the new route taken by Cubana would be operated by an aircraft leased from the Spanish company Plus Ultra, and that both the outbound flight and the return flight would have a stopover in the city of Holguín.
The plane will have the capacity to carry 287 passengers, 17 in premium seats and 270 in economy.
In announcing the air connection, the Minister of Transport described it as “a significant step in strengthening connectivity between Cuba and Europe, the result of collaboration between Cubana de Aviación and other international airlines.”
He also stated that the aim was "to continue increasing the availability of flights in response to growing demand, as well as to strengthen strategic collaborations with sector partners, such as airlines and tour operators."
However, flights will resume during the most critical moments of the tourism industry on the island, which reported a 20.5% drop in the number of visitors from January to September 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.
In nine months, 1,366,720 foreign tourists arrived in the country, which is 352,289 fewer than the previous year, according to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).
The report shows setbacks in almost all source markets. In the case of Germany, which has historically been one of the main sources of tourists to Cuba, there was a 43.5% contraction, with only 26,735 visitors compared to 47,323 last year.
Tourism, regarded by the regime as one of the main sources of foreign currency income, remains far from the official targets, which projected 2.6 million visitors for this year.
