Russia urged the U.S. president Donald Trump to prevent tensions with Venezuela from escalating into a larger conflict, according to statements made by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov to the TASS agency.

The official stated that Moscow stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the government of Caracas amid the political and diplomatic deterioration in the region.

Ryabkov expressed "great alarm and concern" over the Venezuelan situation, noting that tensions "are not diminishing" and that the escalation continues. According to the diplomat, this atmosphere is a result of Washington's attempt to impose "its unquestionable dominance in the region," which he described as a hallmark of the Trump administration.

The deputy minister recalled that Russia and Venezuela recently signed a strategic partnership and cooperation agreement, strengthening their bilateral ties. In this context, he stated that Moscow fully supports Caracas and its political leadership during this time of crisis.

Ryabkov insisted that the Kremlin expects the White House to refrain from taking steps that could worsen the situation and bring it closer to open conflict. "We urge that no moves are made in that direction," he emphasized.

The tension in the Caribbean has increased in recent weeks, driven by a military and diplomatic deployment that Washington justifies as part of its "fight against drug trafficking." The rise in air and naval patrols, along with the presence of specialized units from the Pentagon, has reconfigured the regional balance at a particularly sensitive moment.

United States, that has targeted vessels linked to drug trafficking, maintains that its priority is to halt the trafficking routes that pass through the Caribbean into its territory, arguing that the increasing sophistication of the cartels demands a more robust response.

However, critics point out that these movements coincide with a growing interest from Washington in containing the influence of extra-regional actors and eliminating the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro.

In this context, the region watches with concern as anti-drug rhetoric intertwines with naval maneuvers, diplomatic warnings, and realignments of alliances. This escalation not only poses risks to stability—from military incidents to tensions between neighboring countries—but could also turn the Caribbean into a stage for a broader geopolitical dispute.
