The young Cuban Lisandra Moreno, aged 30, was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an aggressive disease that requires an expensive chemotherapy treatment in the United States.
Her friends have started a campaign on GoFundMe to help her cover medical and living expenses while she fights for her recovery.
Lisandra started her chemotherapy today and needs our help, reads the post of the campaign, which has already raised more than $6,300 of the $13,000 requested.
The organizer of the GoFundMe, a childhood friend of Lisandra, explained that the young woman lives in New Jersey with her husband, far from her family, who remain in Cuba.
"At 30, you expect your friend to tell you things like she’s pregnant or has started a new job, not that she’s been diagnosed with leukemia," she wrote in the message accompanying the campaign.
The post describes Lisandra as “a sweet, shy, loyal woman with deep Christian faith” who has always helped others, but now needs everyone’s support.
"She never asks for anything, she's one of those who prays in silence, but now she needs our help to cover treatment costs, pain medication, rent, and food," the text adds.
The organizers are asking for donations and prayers to support Lisandra in this process.
In addition to GoFundMe, their friends in Cuba are raising funds in a local account to then send them via Zelle, due to the difficulties many Cubans face in accessing international platforms directly, they stated in communication with CiberCuba.
The treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia involves several rounds of intensive chemotherapy, specific medications, and frequent hospitalizations, leading to high costs even with partial health insurance.
Lisandra and her husband are currently facing financial difficulties, as both are unemployed due to the medical situation.
The campaign is titled "Urgent Help for Lisandra with Leukemia", and aims to raise funds to cover medical costs, rent, food, and other basic expenses while she undergoes treatment.
Donations can also be made within Cuba through an account set up by family and friends, who then transfer the funds via Zelle to the United States.
