Another case of animal abuse in a Cuban zoo has sparked outrage on social media.

This time it is about a lion that has gone 8 days without eating at the zoo in the municipality of Florida, Camagüey, according to a report by independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada on Facebook.

In the video shared by Tan Estrada, a starving lion can be seen devouring some bones alone in a cage.

"That's always been the case; that zoo has been in ruins for years. Poor little animal," commented a resident of Camagüey.

"The poor no longer have the strength to roar; it’s been days and days without food. The condition of that zoo is criminal, and all that remains is the memory of it while watching those little animals suffer day after day. When I was a child, I saw what it used to be, and seeing what it has become is painful because nowadays, nothing is the same; everything is getting worse," lamented an internet user.

Recently,  independent animal rights activists urged the public not to visit zoos in Cuba, raising awareness about the lack of veterinary care and the overall deterioration of these facilities, where animals live in neglect and ruin.

In December, an animal rights advocate reported on social media the deplorable conditions in which the animals at the Colón Zoo, in the province of Matanzas, survive, describing the place as “a living cemetery.”

An official journalist visited the Havana Zoo and described rusty cages, persistent humidity, extreme filth, and visibly affected animals, in an environment devoid of veterinarians or an adequate feeding program.

Meanwhile, in Santiago de Cuba, a zoo worker responded with a terse "there they are" in response to complaints about sick animals lacking food, highlighting the institutional indifference.
