President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the victims of the shooting at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island.

“I have been updated on the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in police custody. May God bless the victims and their families!” the president said.

Shortly afterward, Trump corrected his initial statement: “The University Police have amended their earlier statements; the suspect is NOT in police custody.”

In an email sent to students, university authorities confirmed reports of two deceased victims from the active shooting in Barus and Holley, with another eight victims in critical but stable condition.

The deceased victims have not yet been identified. The email added that law enforcement has no suspects in custody, the university newspaper reported.

The shooting led to the closure and emergency alert on campus this Saturday after university officials warned about gunfire near the Barus & Holley Engineering building  and asked the community to take shelter, lock doors, and remain hidden.

The initial alert from the University, sent around 4:22 p.m., stated: “active shooter near Barus & Holley Engineering,” with instructions to run, hide, or fight as a last resort, as well as to silence phones and stay sheltered “until further notice.”

Subsequently, another message requested that refugees continue to stay away from the area, while indicating that there were no suspects in custody and that the police were still searching for the responsible individual or individuals.

A source, a student at Brown University, told our newsroom that the shooter was on the move and had fired on another street.
