Amid the health crisis in Cuba, the authorities of Matanzas reported the possible circulation of the influenza A (H3N2) virus on the island, following an alert from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) regarding a surge in various regions of the world.

The Periódico Girón from that province emphasized that the incidence of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) has not increased in the province, but specialists acknowledge the need to “maintain constant observation” due to the risk of introducing the virus.

According to data from the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, to date, 2,946 patients have been treated for ARI, a figure lower than in previous weeks and 900 cases fewer than in the same period of 2024.

“Severe cases admitted to hospitals and respiratory outbreaks are being monitored. At the border, such as airports, fever is monitored using temperature scanners. We received an alert from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which has already been forwarded to the municipalities,” explained Andrés Lamas Acevedo, director of the Provincial Center.

The specialist emphasized that the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) maintains constant communication with the health authorities in Matanzas regarding the potential entry of the virus into the country.

The news comes amid a serious epidemiological crisis on the island.

The authorities indicate that despite the epidemiological context, there is a decrease in febrile cases associated with arboviral diseases in Matanzas: only 150 in the last week, 21 fewer than the previous one.

The positivity rate in dengue tests has also decreased, as confirmed by provincial health authorities.

They explain that surveillance over the hepatitis A outbreaks in the province is also being maintained.
