The Russian Embassy in Cuba issued a health warning to its citizens in light of the increase in cases of dengue and chikungunya fever on the island, urging tourists to take extra precautions during their stay.

In a statement released this Wednesday on its social media, the diplomatic mission indicated that the alert is in response to reports from the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba regarding the increase in the incidence of both mosquito-borne diseases.

“We strongly recommend that Russian tourists wear closed clothing during peak mosquito activity hours, apply repellents, and avoid reservoirs with stagnant fresh water,” the message stated, accompanied by the phrase “Take care of yourself and your loved ones!”

The embassy reiterated the warning also on the social media platform X, emphasizing the seriousness of the current epidemiological situation in the Caribbean country.

In recent months, Cuban health authorities have reported a resurgence of dengue cases in several provinces, particularly affecting the east and west of the country.

The rise of vector-borne diseases occurs amid a health crisis marked by a shortage of insecticides, limitations in controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and a general decline in the public health system.

International concern over the health situation in Cuba has been rising due to reports of the spread of dengue and chikungunya fever.

Several governments have issued warnings directed at their citizens. One of the most emphatic calls came from a Russian epidemiologist who urged to cancel trips to countries with active outbreaks, including Cuba, due to the risk of contagion.

Canada also issued a travel advisory related to the chikungunya outbreak on the island, recommending special precautions for its citizens.

Similarly, the government of the United States warned about the health risk for those planning to travel to Cuba, emphasizing the need for epidemiological monitoring by tourists.

For its part, Mexico urged its citizens to take extra precautions and consider getting medical insurance before traveling, due to the sustained increase in mosquito-borne diseases in Cuban territory.
