The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado expressed her gratitude to several Latin American governments for their support in the fight for democracy and freedom in Venezuela, as well as for demanding an end to arbitrary detentions and the release of political prisoners under Nicolás Maduro's regime.

In a message published on the social media platform X, Machado stated: “On behalf of the Venezuelans, we thank the governments of Argentina, Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru for firmly expressing their commitment to democracy and human rights in our country, and for demanding an end to arbitrary detentions and the release of nearly one thousand political prisoners in the hands of the Maduro regime.”

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate emphasized that Latin America supports a “just, legitimate, and irreversible struggle for democracy and freedom in Venezuela,” referring to the growing regional backing for demands for political change and respect for fundamental rights.

The statement from Machado comes after the release of a joint communiqué, in which the six countries express their support for "achieving, through peaceful means, the full restoration of democratic order and the unwavering respect for human rights in Venezuela."

In the text, the signing governments also express their “deep concern about the severe migratory, humanitarian, and social crisis” facing the South American country and remind that Venezuela remains a suspended state from Mercosur, in accordance with the Ushuaia Protocol on Democratic Commitment.

Additionally, the statement refers to the reports from United Nations human rights organizations, which warn about the ongoing occurrence of arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances, practices attributed to the repressive apparatus of the regime of Nicolás Maduro and that have been repeatedly condemned by the international community.
