The Cuban baseball player Diego Fernández, 18 years old, left Cuba in the last few hours with the goal of starting the process to sign with an organization in the Major Leagues (MLB), as confirmed by journalist Francys Romero on his social media.
Fernández represented Havana in the 2023 and 2024 U-18 National Championships, where he was regarded as one of the most promising young players in his category.
Recently, the law also was part of the pre-selection for the Industriales team, a sign of the confidence that existed in his development within the structure of Cuban baseball.
After leaving the island, the player will train at the Cacón Academy, located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which is one of the main training centers for international prospects seeking opportunities in professional baseball.
Diego Fernández will be eligible to sign once he obtains the official free agent declaration, a necessary step to legally negotiate with MLB franchises.
His departure adds to the growing list of young talents who are leaving the Cuban sports system in search of better professional opportunities, competitive development, and economic stability, given the structural limitations of baseball on the Island.
