A group of 15 electric vehicles has been added to the funeral service in Havana, authorities from the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) reported during an official tour by President Miguel Díaz-Canel this Wednesday, through various points of the capital.
The new means of transportation were presented at the Axess Commercial Center of Mitrans, located in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, reported the Presidency portal.
According to Oscar Carvajal Serrano, general director of the Automotive Business Group of Mitrans, the new vehicles have the technical conditions necessary to guarantee their electric recharging, both through conventional methods and via solar panels installed at the base.
The fleet will be dedicated exclusively to funeral services in the capital.
In June, news emerged about the delivery of an electric hearse in the municipality of Placetas, Villa Clara.
The announcement comes in a context marked by the ongoing collapse of funeral services in Cuba, affected by the lack of maintenance of hearses, fuel shortages, the shortage of materials for coffin production and poor management.
In various provinces, long delays, makeshift transfers, and scenes of extreme deterioration have been documented in an essential service.
In recent months, serious incidents have been reported, such as coffins falling from vehicles in the middle of the street and bodies left for hours without being moved, events that have sparked outrage and highlight the loss of dignity even after death.
The introduction of this fleet contrasts with the reality of many Cuban families who, outside of Havana, continue to face the impossibility of saying goodbye to their deceased in minimally dignified conditions.
Recently, the government announced the rehabilitation of crematories and funeral homes in Havana, including repairs to equipment at the crematories in Santiago de las Vegas and Guanabacoa, as well as improvements in 22 out of the 24 funeral homes in the capital.
