The U.S. president Donald Trump stated that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin is obstructing the progress toward peace by spreading what he called a lie about an alleged Ukrainian attack on his residence, a claim that —according to Trump and authorities in Kiev— lacks evidence and seeks to justify the continuation of the war.
According to New York Post, the accusation arises following statements from the Kremlin regarding an alleged drone attack, a claim that was categorically denied by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Even the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, admitted that Russia could not provide evidence of the incident, asking the press to accept the official version "in good faith," which was rejected by multiple analysts and Western media.
Trump believes that this type of narrative is part of a recurring strategy by Moscow to undermine any serious diplomatic efforts. "Putin was offered a path to peace and rejected it once again," sources close to the former president stated, according to the cited media, recalling previous attempts at de-escalation that failed due to the Kremlin's lack of willingness.
The criticisms come amid ongoing Russian attacks against Ukrainian civilians. Only during Christmas, Russia launched over 130 drones against Kyiv and other cities, resulting in the deaths of at least seven civilians and damaging critical infrastructure, including residential buildings and power plants.
Trump and certain opinion sectors in the United States argue that it is "hypocritical" for the Kremlin to express outrage over an unverified attack when Russia has systematically bombed civilian areas, has been accused of kidnapping Ukrainian children, and of torturing and executing prisoners of war, in addition to attempting to assassinate Zelensky himself on several occasions.
Beyond Ukraine, Trump states that Russia has become a global actor opposed to the interests of Washington, supporting sanctioned regimes such as Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea, and hindering American operations on various fronts.
For Trump, the message is clear: Putin is not a reliable partner for peace, and his war—presented as a "special military operation"—is still based on lies designed to perpetuate the conflict and block any real diplomatic progress.
