The Department of Homeland Security of the United States (DHS) reported that nearly two million undocumented immigrants have “self-deported” from the country in less than a year, according to a series of postings shared on the social media platform X.

In one of the messages, the official account @DHSgov stated: “1.9 million illegal immigrants self-deported from our country in less than a year.”

The federal agency also urged people who are in the United States without legal status to voluntarily leave the country, presenting self-deportation as the most convenient option to avoid legal consequences.

“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” added the DHS.

The statements are part of the official discourse of the U.S. government to strengthen its immigration message, amid the national debate on border control, deportations, and the future of millions of undocumented immigrants.

Although the DHS presents the numbers as an achievement, organizations that advocate for migrant rights have warned that many of these departures may be driven by fear of detention, raids, and legal restrictions, rather than by truly voluntary decisions.

The announcement generates mixed reactions, while the immigration issue remains one of the most sensitive and polarizing topics in American politics.
