The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, condemned the bombings reported in Venezuelan territory and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, describing these actions as an "affront to sovereignty" and an "extremely dangerous precedent" for the international community.

“Bombing in Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president have crossed an unacceptable line. These acts represent a serious affront to the sovereignty of Venezuela and set an extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community,” Lula expressed in a message posted on his official X account.

The Brazilian president called for a firm response from the UN and reiterated that Brazil "is ready to promote dialogue and cooperation."

"This action brings to mind the worst moments of interference in Latin American and Caribbean politics and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace," he said.

However, Lula avoided mentioning the years of repression, censorship, and humanitarian crisis caused by the Chavista regime, which has left thousands of political prisoners and millions of Venezuelans in exile.

His stance reinforces the ideological closeness to Maduro's government and reflects a complacent view towards allied dictatorships in the region.

The military incursion of the U.S. into Venezuela

Lula's statements come after U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced the capture of Maduro and his wife in a large-scale military operation.

During the early hours of Saturday, intense bombardments were reported at strategic facilities in Venezuela.

While Venezuela's political future remains uncertain, Lula's reaction signifies a tacit endorsement from Brazil for one of the most scrutinized regimes in Latin America.
