The President of the United States, Donald Trump, reacted this Saturday to the capture of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a military operation led by the elite unit Delta Force in Caracas.
“I had never seen anything like this. I was able to see it in real time and noticed every aspect,” declared Trump in an interview with FOX News.
It was incredible to see the professionalism, the quality of leadership... Amazing!,” added the American president, who assured that it was “an impeccable operation.”
The Department of Justice announced this Saturday the formal indictment of Maduro and his wife for narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and possession of war weapons. Both were detained in the Venezuelan capital and are in the custody of U.S. forces.
The Attorney General of the United States, Pamela Bondi, confirmed in a statement that Maduro and Flores were indicted in the Southern District of New York and will soon be transferred to U.S. soil to face trial.
Maduro and his wife have been accused of conspiring to traffic cocaine to the United States and of using automatic weapons and explosives for terrorist purposes, Bondi explained on his X account.
"They will soon face the full weight of American justice, on American soil and in American courts," added the prosecutor, who thanked President Trump for "having the courage to demand accountability on behalf of the American people."
The prosecutor also congratulated the military forces that carried out the "successful mission," executed by Delta Force, the same unit that eliminated the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in 2019.
The capture of Maduro and Flores marks a historic event. It is the first time in decades that the United States has conducted a direct military operation in Latin America, which has generated widespread international attention and mixed reactions in the region.
